A deep desire to learn about food justice in the Turtle Island context. I wanted to understand how local food systems operate and who leads food organizations.
Under the guidance of Dr. Jennifer Grenz, I wanted to broaden my understanding of food systems, which go beyond organizations and start from how we care and steward the land and support those who, since time immemorial, have taken part in land healing.
This research’s primary objective is to understand better the experiences and motivations of Indigenous, Black, and people of colour (IBPOC) working in alternative food organizations, including urban agriculture organizations, food banks, and good food clubs, in the inner city of Winnipeg. I am particularly interested in identifying opportunities for diversity and inclusion in these food organizations’ leadership to ensure they reflect the communities they serve. With my research, I would like to inform policy and respectfully present the stories of those who would like to participate in my research.
